Recreation Job Description

Position: Recreation Director

The Recreation Director is responsible for assisting and advising theRecreation Committee and/or its Chairman in formulating policies andbasic procedures governing the work of the department and for puttingthem into effect.

Most of the Recreation Director’s time is devoted to planning,organizing, supervising, and promoting the work interest of therecreation department.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Supervise the operation of the pool complex, playground area, and other department facilities.
* Assist in recruitment, selection and training of all staff.
* Prepares purchase requisitions for procurement of supplies and equipment for the departments.
* Keep an updated inventory of all equipment and supplies of thedepartments and submit one copy of same to town bookkeeping accountoffice. Inventory should be done at beginning and end of season.
* Assist in the opening and closing of the pool complex
* Must have good public relation skills with the patrons and community.Prepares public relations material for all news media and publications.
* Supervise the collection and banking of all receipts taken in the pool complex.
* Prepares necessary reports for Dutchess County Youth Bureau which partially funds some of our programs.
* Assists in applying for grants for the recreation program.
* Review and approve evaluation performances of all staff members atleast once during the season. All personnel files must be kept at theTown Hall.
* Review evaluation forms with employees. Verify that they are signed and dated.
* Review and handle all staff grievances immediately. Directorgrievances must be in writing and submitted to the recreation committee.
* Organize and supervise all seasonal and externally funded programs.
* Organize and conduct the yearly registration for the summer programs.Ensure the timely assembly and printing of the summer program brochurefor weeks before the summer program registration.
* Conducts regular meetings with seasonal staff to review and evaluateprogram. Attendance and minutes should be taken and submitted to theRecreation Committee.

In the absence of the director, assistance will assure these specific duties.

Education and Experience

* College graduate with Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or related field.
* The Recreation Director must be well versed in the philosophy ofrecreation and fully understand all the activities comprising ourrecreation program.
* Two to five years experience in management/ supervision of recreation programs preferred.

* Maintains good relationships with parents, children, staff, andRecreation Committee of the Town Board while firmly enforcing facility/program rules and regulations.
* Certification in American Red Cross CPR is preferred.

RECREATION DIRECTOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is an administrative position having responsibility for planningand directing the recreation program for a county, town and/orvillage. The work is carried out in accordance with the policiesoutlined by the local recreation committee or youth board permittingwide leeway for planning a complete recreation program. Thisclass differs from that of Assistant Recreation Director by virtue ofthe total responsibility for the recreation program. This work isperformed under the general direction of the municipal legislativebody, the municipal chief executive, or local committees. Generalsupervision is exercised over the Assistant Recreation Director,Recreation Attendants and Lifeguards.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Promotes the organization of recreation activities;
2. Confers with policy making body on matters of size, scope and financing of recreation program;
3. Conducts training sessions for recreation specialists, attendants and lifeguards;
4. Makes plans for improving existing recreation areas;
5. Conducts public relations activities by deliveringaddresses and issuing press reports on the recreation program;
6. Purchases supplies and materials;
7. Maintains discipline in swimming areas and on playgrounds;
8. Prepares reports on the operations of the program;
9. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the theory and practices governing the administrationof a community recreation program; good knowledge of the equipment,facilities and personnel necessary to carry out a modern recreationprogram; ability to promote, organize and carry out recreationactivities on a moderate scale; ability to get along well with childrenand the general public; ability to plan and supervise the work ofothers; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; physical conditioncommensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND:
EITHER: (A) Two (2) years ofresponsible experience in planning or directing recreation activities;
OR: (B) Two (2) years of study at aregionally accredited or New York State registered college oruniversity with major work in physical education or recreation;
OR: (C) An equivalent combinationof training and experience within the limits of (A) and (B) above.
